Workshops

We offer a number of workshops to communities and organizations interested in applying archival best practices in their local settings.

All training can be tailor-fit to meet your needs. The samples below showcase workshops we’ve done recently.

Archival Literacy for Activists & Journalists

In this workshop series, we cover:

  • Different types of archives and what you're likely to find in each (city government, county government, national government, private, university, etc.)

  • How archivists make decisions about what to keep and for how long

  • Finding the right archives for you (searching across archival collections, searching in individual collections, contacting archivists for reference questions)

  • What to expect when you visit an archive (check-in procedures, interpreting research procedures and rules, etc.)

  • What to expect when you visit an archive remotely (digitization practices, expectations, and questions to ask)

  • Understanding usage rights of material in archives

Archival Best Practices for Non-Archivists

Geared toward those of us working in social justice-oriented organizations, this set of workshops teaches basic archival principles and how to apply them in local contexts. Major topics include:

  1. Deciding what to keep

  2. Keeping track of what you want to keep

  3. Keeping what you want to keep safe

  4. Sharing what’s important with the right people

  5. Documentation and succession planning
