Documenting Resistance

to Louisiana’s Anti-Trans Legislation

In 2021 and 2022, Louisiana, like many states across the country, saw an onslaught of anti-trans bills. We worked with a coalition of activists and policy experts to tell the story of the resistance to these bills.

To ensure this history motivates future actions, we teamed up with the Louisiana Trans Oral History Project and Last Call Oral History Project to:

  • Collect personal narratives

  • Create multiple outputs, including a podcast series.

  • Donate narratives to cultural heritage institutions for long-term preservation and access.

Project Outcomes

Interviews

Of the dozen-plus interviews we did for this project, each interviewee had the opportunity to donate theirs to a cultural heritage institution for the long-term preservation and access. Taken together, these interviews represent an important historical record of the work to resist anti-trans legislation, and can serve as a roadmap for future organizers.

Podcast

To help promote the work of the legislative organizers, we produced a limited run podcast, “Mais, Jamais: The Rise of Louisiana’s Anti-Trans Legislation and the Story of Our Resistance.” Find it on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and with full transcripts here on our site.

Journalism

We promoted the work through a number of channels, including journalism pieces, such as “Agitation to a System: Trans Resistance in Louisiana.”
